(Worthy News) – A prominent Russian politician recently stated that the imprisonment of Donald Trump, following his guilty verdict in the criminal hush money trial, could lead to a “civil war” in the United States, Newsweek reported.
Russian politician Oleg Matveychev, a member of the Russian State Duma, recently appeared on the state-owned television channel Russia-1 to discuss the verdict. A segment of his appearance was shared on YouTube on Saturday by Russian Media Monitor, a watchdog group founded by journalist Julia Davis to combat Russian propaganda.
After Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels by his then-lawyer Michael Cohen before the 2016 election, the former president now faces possible jail time.
Trump denies the 2006 affair, maintains his innocence, and claims the case is politically motivated.
The sentencing is scheduled for July 11, just days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to accept the GOP nomination.
Matveychev warned that imprisoning “the most popular man” could have dire impacts on American society, stating, “This may not only discredit American institutions but cause very severe unrest and even civil war.” He added, “If this does not lead to civil war, this would mean a new era of the American society. It’s evolution to a totalitarian regime.”
Meanwhile, the term “civil war” has surfaced among MAGA supporters following Trump’s guilty verdict, both online and at protests. Outside Trump Tower in Manhattan on Friday, where Trump was holding a press conference, one man in a MAGA hat told Newsweek, “I believe these far radical left are trying to start a civil war.” Another supporter, draped in a Trump flag, said if Trump were arrested, it would be “the cherry on top that sets off the civil war or World War III.”
