2 Timothy 4:3-4 King James Version (KJV)For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The Greek word translated as “itching” literally means “to itch, rub, scratch, or tickle”. In this verse, the apostle Paul is warning the church that people will no longer tolerate sound doctrine and will instead seek out teachers who will tell them what they want to hear, rather than what is true. This could mean sermons that are more entertaining or charming than challenging or edifying.
Everyone will tell you they want to hear the truth or to know what is true but do they really?
Have you ever asked someone if they want to know the truth and when you tell them they get upset with you?
The truth is we all want to hear the truth especially if it’s something good to hear. Here is one truth that isn’t
easy to hear. If we really believed in hell the way Jesus spoke about it wouldn’t we be standing on our
heads to get loved ones saved, even strangers?
Here is the truth; Ezekiel 3:18-19 says, “When I say to the wicked, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn him or speak out to warn the wicked from his wicked way that he may live, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand”.
Is God just speaking to Ezekiel here or to us all? Was it only Ezekiel who was given this responsibility? I wonder. Some think so but I think it applies to us all. What do you think?
