An eye for an eye, or Turn the other cheek?

Yesterday I was presented with a question that I thought might make for a good discussion here at CAC.

The question pertained to:

An eye for an eye.

and –

Turn the other cheek.

Part of the question concerned dealing with those that commit murder. Should it be life in prison? Should it be the death penalty?

Should there be the possibility of parole?

I know what I answered, what would you answer, and why?

I also know that there are many variables, and many facets to this. Should one abide by that which is set forward in the law of God, in which certain breaches are prescribed capital punishment? How do we rightly divide this?
