Daily Thread – Acts 18

Paul Returns to Antioch

18 So Paul still remained [e]a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow. 19 And he came to Ephesus, and left them there; but he himself entered the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to stay a longer time with them, he did not consent, 21 but took leave of them, saying, “I[f] must by all means keep this coming feast in Jerusalem; but I will return again to you, God willing.” And he sailed from Ephesus.

22 And when he had landed at Caesarea, and [g]gone up and greeted the church, he went down to Antioch. 23 After he had spent some time there, he departed and went over the region of Galatia and Phrygia [h]in order, strengthening all the disciples.

Ministry of Apollos

24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.

Good morning and welcome

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

... If He is not Faithful to Israel . . .
    Tuesday, October 15, 2024
There are many believers who believe that the New Covenant nullifies God's calling on Israel. But the New Covenant is first spoken of in Jeremiah 31:31. Then right after that God says that the Jewish people, the children of Israel, will never cease from being a nation before Him. So the new covenant is not against the Jewish people. It's for them. In fact, the New Covenant is first made with the house of Israel and Judah. It is the fulfillment of the promise given to Abraham that His seed would be a blessing to the nations. The apostles of the New Covenant were all Jewish. If you're in the New Covenant, you're linked to Israel. It came through Israel and it's going to be fulfilled in Israel. So, their blessing is your blessing and your blessing is their blessing. If God were to abandon His covenant to Israel, then what assurance would you have of His covenant to you? Thank God that He's faithful to Israel and to you as well. Rejoice that God is faithful to His people and be faithful to Him.
From Message #962 - The Genesis Gene
    Scripture: 2 Thessalonians 3:3
Today's Mission - Today, rejoice in the fact that God is faithful to His people Israel and to you.

    • Many in large Christian denominations? They think they ARE the "Tree". When Paul and the rest of the Bible states we Gentiles were GRAFTED on to the "Tree".

    • Isaiah 29:10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
Romans 11:8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) UNTO THIS DAY.
The very Word of God that should have awakened them has blinded them. God is not to blame, Israel is.

  • I'm going to share with you all a little of what I deal with on social media trying to witness.

Let me simplify this for you: I do not accept the Bible, or any religious text, or really any text at all as the final authority on anything, so citing Bible verses doesn't help convince me of anything except your inability to think outside of the box you're in. If a book makes claims that neither I nor anybody else can meaningfully interrogate, then it's not useful as a basis of knowledge.

don't argue with me stating that this is fantasy because I know for a fact it isn't

That's the thing, you actually don't know this for a fact. You believe it strongly. You can't see the difference between these two things, and that's my point.

You say miracles exist? Prove it. Prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. Have somebody perform one in a lab, repeatedly. Belief does not count. I want evidence that goes beyond personal testimony, because human perception is full of gaps and holes and biases out the wazoo, and that is a fact that stands up to scrutiny in a lab.

The bible does not contradict itself.

Not only is this entire thread about one of those contradictions, here's an entire page of examples of how you're wrong. There's more where that came from.

You argue very hard against God and I highly suspect there is a good reason

The "good reason" is that the more I think on the matter, the more problems I find with the idea, far beyond what we've discussed here. I have yet to encounter a single mainstream interpretation of God that squares with the basic facts of reality, e.g. the sheer scale of the universe and humanity's undeniable non-centrality to it, the nature of biological life, etc.

Meanwhile, I see loads of people all over the world doing terrible, awful sh*t in "God's" name, whether it's Jesus or Yaweh or Shiva or whomever. For a lot of people, God is less of a moral guide and more of an excuse for them to foist their will on others. That kind of thinking isn't unique to religion, but it sure seems to crop up there a lot.

If there is no God then there are no rules to follow and there is no judgement or being that you will have to answer to at the end of your life. And if there is no God there is no meaning to your life.

Now who's showing their ignorance? (You. It's you.)

As if there isn't an entire body of secular moral philosophers like Camus, Sarte, Nietzsche, Rawls, and countless others, all of whom have something to say about these matters. Have you ever read any of them? I'm guessing not, otherwise you wouldn't say such ignorant things. Go read a book on existentialism and get back to me.

And am I really supposed to be living a moral life purely because I'm afraid of divine punishment after I die? Is somebody who "follows the rules" solely because they think God has a metaphysical gun to their head really a good person? F**k no, that's just rank self-interest. What a selfish and myopic thing to believe, that the only foundation for morality is a personal reward in the hereafter.

If we're looking for an axiom upon which to build all morality, how about this: that we as human beings choose to believe in the inherent value and dignity in our fellow man, and that we can construct meaning in our own lives. That's pretty much all you need as a basis to form a pretty solid value system.

Moreover, fixating on what happens after we die cheapens the life that we actually have. If this one life is all we get, that makes it more meaningful and more precious than it simply being some cosmic testing chamber for some inscrutable purpose.

You don't realize this, but your view of the world sounds small. You've convinced yourself you've found the answers and have stopped considering that there's more out there.

    My response copied;

You say miracles exist? Prove it. Prove it beyond a reasonable doubt.

I don't have to prove anything to you. As I have said you are welcome to your unbelief.

Let me simplify this for you: I do not accept the Bible, or any religious text, or really any text at all as the final authority on anything.

So what is the final authority for you then? Yourself I take it?

I am not ignorant, and I don't believe in God because, what was it? " think God has a metaphysical gun to their head" It is your view that is small. You have reduced my faith to fear of hell. I fell in love with Jesus.

You continue to take shots at me calling me names. Ignorant mainly which I have not done to you.

Some of the people you name, like Nietzsche for example. "Nietzsche was exhibiting bizarre and grandiose delusions when he was brought to the asylum in Basel. The asylum doctors assumed that these delusions were a new development, constituting a complete break with Nietzsche's previous mental state. In January 1889, Nietzsche was admitted to a psychiatric asylum in Basel"

Sartre was a Marxist. Marxism doesn't work. " Marxism-Leninism and Maoism, the revolutionary doctrines developed by Vladimir Lenin in Russia and Mao Zedong in China, respectively"

"Mao's policies were responsible for a vast number of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, and his government has been described as totalitarian."

Marxism doesn't sound like a good idea to me at all. Nor does the ideas of Sartre as they led to the misery and death of many thousands.

"Philosopher John Rawls suggests that we should imagine we sit behind a veil of ignorance that keeps us from knowing who we are and identifying with our personal circumstances. By being ignorant of our circumstances, we can more objectively consider how societies should operate."

Well that is rich. LOL, I've heard some things in my life but that one takes the cake. Rawls is ridiculous.

"What was Camus' philosophy?Although he is often referred to as an Existentialist, the school of philosophy that examines existence and man's search for possible meanings of life, Camus preferred the term Absurdist, the belief that reality is irrational and meaningless."

These are the people you name, seriously? Look you are welcome to what you believe as am I. I would ask that you respect that fact. If these people that you named do it for you then more power to you. My heart was in the right place in bringing this up to you in the first place. It's not about fear, but about life. " I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: [26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." I want people to have eternal life which is why I bring up the Lord. You have rejected it, so there it is.

    • There is one thing that I do have to agree with "him" on......

Moreover, fixating on what happens after we die cheapens the life that we actually have.

By doing this, many Christians miss out on the gift we have been given in the here and now. I cringe every time I hear someone talking about their crowns to come.
Meanwhile, there is a misunderstanding of the "crowns of gold" being the wisdom we are given in the moment (here and now) with Christ. It is metaphoric, and explained to a point in Proverbs.

  • Good Morning. God Bless All Here Today.
"Now and Forever. May You Always Be Able. To Touch the Hand of God."
