Gym Creeps?
So everyone is talking about this new social media trend of women complaining about men creeping on them while they’re working out in the gym. Unsurprisingly, once something becomes politicized, the truth can become very hard to find. Those who claim to bring light and clarity only create confusion and darkness. I think Paul’s lament of human reasoning is appropriate here: “where is the one who is wise? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn’t God made the world’s wisdom foolish?” (1 Corinthians 1:20).
As much as the sages of this age reason about what is “right” and “wrong”, there’s no moral authority apart from God and no light for life apart from his word. So what has God said about this?
Jesus said “But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:28).
Jesus also said “Offenses will certainly come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to stumble” (Luke 17:1–2).
Almost all the talk going around on one side of the political narrative focuses on how men take advantage of women being empowered by patriarchal systems; their thinking isn’t that sexual behaviors outside of covenant are wrong, but that they are victims of male-dominated power structures. While the other side of the political narrative is balking at the hypocrisy of these women playing the “victim-card” when they dress to attract the very attention they’re bemoaning, and some versions of this narrative even excuse or justify the men looking at the women. But both narratives are blind to why these behaviors are wrong.
When women dress to attract unfaithful sexual attention, they are guilty of sinning against those they cause to stumble just as much as the men who lust after them are guilty of sinning against them by using them to gratify their own sexual pleasure. Both behaviors violate sincere love; one uses lust for pride, and the other for self-pleasure.
I know what I’ve said – especially about women who dress to attract sexual attention – violates every dogma western society holds dear because we loathe God’s gender design, but the woman’s sexual beauty belongs exclusively to her husband alone just as much as the husband’s love belongs exclusively to his wife alone. Women have no more right to display their sexual beauty to men outside the marriage covenant than men have to indulge their sexual appetites with women outside the marriage covenant. Men and women were designed to display God’s glory in covenant. And this is why the world, in all it’s moral philosophizing, is hopelessly blind, as Scripture says, “there is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God . There is no fear of God before their eyes” (Romans 3:10-11, 18).
Women today are offended when they’re told that they should not display their sexual beauty to attract attention for themselves for the sole reason that they’re not thinking about God’s design for his glory. And it’s the same for men, who use women to gratify their sexual pleasure because they’re not thinking about God’s glory either.
Women are using the sin of men for their own pride and advantage. Men are using the hypocrisy of women to justify their own sin. And at the end of the day everyone insists on their own innocence.
Our modern reasoning has placed “Self” on the throne above all else. And my problem with the political narratives and moral philosophizing of both sides is that “there is no fear of God before their eyes!” And when Christians listen to moral reasoning that does not have God in view, even when it comes from our supposed “political allies”, we unwittingly give the throne that belongs to God to those who should submit to his throne.
