The topic of deliverance came up yesterday and I felt like I should address this topic. What does the word of God tell us about this?
“21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.”
“24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”
One cannot just sweep a person clean and then not fill them up with the Holy Spirit. If they aren’t ready to be saved, if they don’t recognize Jesus as their savior better to leave them alone than to attempt deliverance.
“Matthew 17:20-21 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”
This verse is about the disciples who were unable to heal and Jesus told them it was because of their unbelief. However unbelief can also be a hindrance to deliverance.
If a Christian is oppressed I believe that one needs to sit and talk to a person before attempting deliverance. Many things that can open the door to oppression. I think this should be done privately first. People are not going to be forthcoming about their battles and struggles in the middle of a church crowd.
I do not believe a born again Christian who is filled with the Holy Spirit can be possessed by a demonic spirit. Satan may attack, oppress and people can open a door for this by many different things. Unforgiveness, fear, lust, past wounds, for example. Sometimes just prayer with this person is enough.
If you are dealing with someone who is actually possessed by demonic spirits don’t approach it lightly. I wouldn’t attempt deliverance unless there had been prayer prior and perhaps fasting. I wouldn’t attempt it if this person doesn’t acknowledge that Jesus is Lord. I wouldn’t attempt it unless there was a desire to be saved and receive the Holy Spirit. There is nothing to fear but remember even the archangel Michael who is the highest ranking angel and defender of God’s people had to deal with a demonic spirit called the prince of Persia. Michael didn’t presume to bring a reviling accusation but instead said “The Lord rebuke you”. Jude 1;9 The reason I bring this up is deliverance is not something to get puffed up about or play around with.
Luke 10:17-19 KJV
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
But then Jesus goes on to say in Luke 10’20 ” Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
