Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. (2 Corinthians 3:15, 16)
God sent Paul out to the Gentile world as a messenger of the New Covenant. This is what God equipped him to do. And for good reason. As he wrote to the Corinthians, “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant – not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (2 Corinthians 3:6).
According to this verse, the letter had a purpose. That was to show you and me our spiritual condition, that we were spiritually dead. That is where the law left you. It could not give you life or make you right in God’s sight. Jesus is the one who did that through the New Covenant.
As the verse indicates, that is the reason for the New Covenant. It is of the Spirit who gives life. The day you received Christ, you were given life, his life, and placed squarely in the New Covenant. As a believer in Jesus, you live in the New Covenant, not the Old. This is key to understanding the Bible.
Here is the reason. If you read the Old Covenant to find life, or look to the law as your guide to living the Christian life, you will become frustrated and confused, as so many believers have. They read the Bible looking to find rules, regulations and commandments. In other words, they read to find out what they are supposed to do as a believer. But that is not the purpose of the law, or the Old Covenant. Trying to blend the purposes of these two covenants leads to great confusion; as Paul wrote, “when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts.”
As you go into the Word of God, realize that everything in the Old Covenant was written to point you to the New. The Old consists of shadows and types and examples. Hebrews 10:1 explains, “The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.” In the New Covenant, you get the real thing – Jesus.
When you read the Bible, turn to Jesus and let him remove any veil that may be covering your heart and mind. He will give you fresh eyes to see, to know and to experience His life to the full.
If reading the Bible is confusing to you, or you are having a hard time making sense out of the Bible, today would you admit that to Jesus? Once you do, ask Him for fresh eyes to see all that you have in Christ through the New Covenant. Let me encourage you to read through 2 Corinthians 3 and Hebrews 10:1-18. Then, as you open your Bible, put on your New Covenant glasses. This will clear away the confusion and let you experience the real thing through faith in Jesus.
