By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible (Hebrews 11:14-17).
Moses was the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, not by birth, but by circumstance. For Moses, this meant that everything Egypt had to offer was his for the taking.
Yet, as an adult, he chose a different life.
He denied his Egyptian identity.
As the writer of Hebrews recorded, Moses chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.
He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt. He endured because he saw him who is invisible.
This was Moses’ bold and courageous faith in action…a faith based on promises yet to be fulfilled, but fully guaranteed by “him who is invisible.”
As Hebrews explains, Moses lived his life of faith in the shadow of the good things that were to come in Christ, not the realities themselves.
That’s what makes you and me different than Moses. We have Jesus. He is reality, the substance of all that Moses longed for in life. And he lives in us.
We have an unshakable identity, the riches of God’s grace, and the power of God to renounce worldly passions and ungodliness, and to live righteous, upright lives in this world of darkness.
The world offers the fleeting pleasures of sin. These pleasures are empty, nothing more than cheap imitation. But you have Jesus. He is the real thing. And you have all of the riches of his love and grace. With confidence and courage, live out by faith who you are in Christ.
